Bodrum Print
Bodrum is situated on the western Mediterranean Coast and is a major business and tourist centre. A thriving and bustling town for those who like a busy life, Bodrum offers the visitor a wonderful shopping opportunity and literally thousands of years of history.

ImageOriginally known as Halicarnossos, the history of Bodrum extends from the 13th century B.C., whilst excavations have shown relics dating back over 5,000 years.

The oldest antiquity is the Mausoleum, standing at 50 metres in height at the time, was built by Artemisia II as a tribute to her husband King Mausolos. It became one of the wonders of the ancient world and mausoleum is, to this day, the accepted term for a large tomb.

Standing above the city and presenting a wonderful backdrop stands an imposing Roman amphitheatre.

The impressive Castle of St. Peter was constructed by the famous Knights of St John during their wars with Turkey in the 15th century until they were eventually driven out. During the crusades, it became a place of safety and refuge for Christians. After years of neglect, it has now been renovated and presents itself as an archaeological museum.

Some parts of the ancient city walls still remain today and restoration is underway to restore as much as possible. It is at the Myndos Gate the Alexander the Great amassed his army for an assault on the city, after which he destroyed all but the Mausoleum.

In Bodrum, such is the wealth of its history, that excavations are still taking place and new relics regularly unearthed.

ImageAlthough not in Bodrum, but within easy reach in the same area of Turkey, lies the ancient city of Ephesus. Throughout its history, it has been occupied and destroyed by a variety of nations. A place of homage for Christians, it has been visited by Alexander the Great and St Paul. As is stands today, there still remains is a plethora of ancient buildings and history,
